چکیده
Voiculescu's free probability theory { which was introduced in an operator algebraic context, but has since then developed into an exciting theory with a lot of links to other elds { has an interesting combinatorial facet: it can be described by the combinatorial concept of multiplicative functions on the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this survey I want to explain this connection { without assuming any knowledge neither on free probability theory nor on non-crossing partitions.

Voiculescu’s free probability theory – which was introduced in an operator algebraic context, but has since then developed into an exciting theory with a lot of links to other fields – has an interesting combinatorial facet: it can be described by the combinatorial concept of multiplicative functions on the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this survey I want to explain this connection – w...
متن کاملZeons, Lattices of Partitions, and Free Probability
Central to the theory of free probability is the notion of summing multiplicative functionals on the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this paper, a graph-theoretic perspective of partitions is investigated in which independent sets in graphs correspond to non-crossing partitions. By associating particular graphs with elements of “zeon” algebras (commutative subalgebras of fermion algebras...
متن کاملNon-crossing Cumulants of Type B
We establish connections between the lattices of non-crossing partitions of type B introduced by V. Reiner, and the framework of the free probability theory of D. Voiculescu. Lattices of non-crossing partitions (of type A, up to now) have played an important role in the combinatorics of free probability, primarily via the noncrossing cumulants of R. Speicher. Here we introduce the concept of no...
متن کاملSimply Generated Non-Crossing Partitions
We introduce and study the model of simply generated non-crossing partitions, which are, roughly speaking, chosen at random according to a sequence of weights. This framework encompasses the particular case of uniform non-crossing partitions with constraints on their block sizes. Our main tool is a bijection between non-crossing partitions and plane trees, which maps such simply generated non-c...
متن کاملThe splitting process in free probability theory
Free cumulants were introduced by Speicher as a proper analog of classical cumulants in Voiculescu’s theory of free probability. The relation between free moments and free cumulants is usually described in terms of Möbius calculus over the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this work we explore another approach to free cumulants and to their combinatorial study using a combinatorial Hopf al...
